I'm a member of a local group, Northern Michigan Textile Artists. We meet monthly in a beautiful space at the library in Charlevoix, MI. We are lucky to have Kathie Briggs, a nationally known and talented fiber artist in our group. Kathy is an accomplished doll artist and also designs nature focused art quilts. Her work uses a full range of color and texture. She builds layers of manipulated fabrics, assorted fibers, beads and decorative threads. Her fiber art is intuitive and spontaneous. |

Kathie Briggs shows one of her free-pieced quilts. It is a fun and quick method. |
Kathie Briggs explains her piecing method, where she cuts and inserts 3/4" strips into 6" square fabrics.
At this month’s meeting, Kathie demonstrated a simple free piecing method she uses as a base for her quilted work. Other members brought free-pieced quilts as supplements to Kathie's demo. Kathie suggested three authors to look at for free-piecing methods... Gwen Marston, Jane Davila, and Diane Hire.

More pressing.
A finished block, approximately 6" square, can be squared to 4.5" if necessary.
